In 2013 I decided to take a different, more structured approach to watching films.
While sounding logical, this is not without difficulty.
The process of selecting a director requires thought– do I pick a more complex (some would say boring :-)) filmmaker and make myself watch films that I would not otherwise have seen, or do I pick a more accessible filmmaker whose work is easier but less educational?
Another challenge is the commitment to continue to watch films that I struggle with, when it is so easy to switch to a simpler or more exciting film. Staying true to the course, in other words.
When reading literature, there is a joy that comes from reading beautiful, elegant sentences (even if they require rereading to capture the full meaning). From knowing that a book has expanded your vocabulary (even if it meant constantly reaching for a dictionary – thank you kindle!) And from learning the flow of influence – tracing back writing styles and techniques from modern authors to the inventors.
I hope to do the same with cinema and I hope to share that joy with you.
