The UK has an odd, but much-loved advertising tradition: each Christmas all the major supermarket chains release special Christmas TV ads. These ads are lavishly produced, emotionally-charged affairs, that start rolling out from mid-November.
The tradition has spread to other parts of the world, and other industries, resulting in a glut of feel-good stories of family, friendship and caring.
Here is a round-up of some of my favorite Christmas ads of 2017
Air New Zealand – A Very Merry Mistake
Santa struggles with arranging presents for New Zealand’s kids because he can’t understand their accents. Very funny, and keeps the brand’s tradition of wacky advertising alive.
Audi – Parking Lot
Two Audi drivers turn a parking lot into a racetrack as they compete for the last parking spot for their Christmas shopping.
In a post-apocalyptic future, a robot yearns for companionship. Lovely production, combining TV’s trend of destroyed worlds with ET-like emotion
Intermarché – J’ai tant rêvé
Terrified at the realization that a fat Santa won’t fit down the chimney, a boy tries to help Santa lose weight. Very cute ad from the French supermarket.
Debenhams – #YouShall
Ewan Macgregor narrates a modern-day Cinderella tale, with social media!
The Spanish Lottery – Danielle
Directed by Alejandro Amenábar, this one clocks in at 19 minutes, making it more of a short film than an ad, although there is also a ‘TV cut’ of 3.5 minutes. An alien crash lands on earth and takes the form of a woman. She tried to make her way through Madrid, learning to communicate. Thumbs up for the spirit of togetherness!
Marks & Spencer
Paddington Bear mistakes a burglar for Santa and helps him to distribute the presents that he just stole. The ad ties in with the upcoming feature film.
We see the hustle and bustle as different families prepare for Christmas. The ad was attacked for featuring a Muslim family exchanging Christmas presents.
A boy makes friends with the monster who lives under his bed.
A girl and her father explore the magical factory where Asda is preparing all their Christmas delights. A bit of Wes Anderson-like fun here.
There are lots of other Christmas Ads, but these are my favorites so far!
